Before WWII, people in Hakata made mochi (sticky rice) cakes in the new year to the sound of the shamisen and taiko drums, and this tradition re-emerged in 1996. On the day of the event, red and white rice cakes will be distributed to 100 people who enter the Hakata Machiya Furusatokan.
