Embrace the Lunar New Year with the traditional Hakata Mochitsuki, a cherished annual event in Hakata. This custom, which dates back to pre-war times, was a poetic part of Hakata’s cultural landscape, where mochi makers would go from house to house, pounding mochi to the rhythms of shamisen and taiko drums. Since 1996, this enchanting mochi-making tradition has been revived and continues to captivate locals and visitors alike.
Experience the rhythmic mochi pounding in harmony with the shamisen and taiko, a mesmerizing spectacle that captures the essence of Hakata’s festive spirit. The event also features the traditional ‘Matoi Buri’ performance by the local fire brigade, a vibrant display of cultural heritage.
Join in the mochi-making, or simply enjoy the freshly pounded mochi (available to the first 150 participants, with tickets distributed from around 12 o’clock). Don’t miss this opportunity to partake in Hakata’s New Year festivities and start your year with a taste of tradition!
