Hakata Tomyo Lantern Arts Festival 2026

For one night only, temples, shrines, historic sites, and narrow lanes across Hakata are illuminated by tens of thousands of handmade candle lanterns created by local residents. The event grew out of Hakata’s long-standing sentomyo tradition, in which lights are offered with prayers for good health, family safety, and well-being.

At locations including Kushida Shrine and Hakata Elementary School, thousands of lanterns are arranged to form large-scale illuminated artworks on the ground. From Hakata Old Town to Hakata Riverain and the area around JR Hakata Station, visitors can walk from one district to another and experience a different display of light at each stop.
