Nakasu Jazz is one of Fukuoka’s signature music festivals, transforming the entire Nakasu entertainment district into an open-air concert venue each autumn. Established in 2009 to revive the area’s musical heritage—when dance halls and cabarets regularly featured live performances—the festival has grown into one of Japan’s largest free urban jazz events.
Centered around Nakasu Odori, multiple outdoor stages present an eclectic lineup spanning jazz, funk, soul, pop, and more. While many visitors come to see particular artists, one of the festival’s greatest pleasures is simply wandering from stage to stage, letting the music lead the way through the lively streets.
Tip: Spend the evening exploring Nakasu on foot, stopping for dinner or drinks between performances, and discovering unexpected live acts along the riverside and throughout the neighborhood.
