A grand gathering of spiritual beasts, mythical creatures, and monsters from around the world is taking place at the Fukuoka City Museum! The exhibition features 350 items, including paintings, books, and festival implements from the National Museum of Ethnology and Kyushu, showcasing the diversity of imaginative creatures such as mermaids, dragons, and kappa. How have people around the world perceived, explained, and depicted these “different” beings that deviate from common sense and customs? Explore the origins of human imagination and creativity through an array of peculiar, mysterious, eerie yet endearing works, including Japan’s largest collection of yokai artifacts like a “mermaid skeleton” and guardian deities from shrines.
