New shops and homes have sprung up around the redevelopment of a former university campus in Ropponmatsu, while longstanding eateries and old backstreets remain. Independent cafes, shops, bookstores, and bars dot the neighborhood, where old and new cultures mingle, making it a rewarding area to explore on foot.
Usually held each spring, Ryokudo Sanpo Market returns for a special edition marking the ninth anniversary of Ropponmatsu 421. Regular market vendors and makers will gather with an eclectic selection of lifestyle goods, clothing, crafts, baked treats, food, and drinks. The event also features a flea market run by business owners from Kyogokugai, a nearby cluster of lanes lined with izakaya and bars.
