Founded in 1870, Hamachi Shuzō is the brewery behind Suginoya, Fukuoka’s first local beer brewery. Every February, it hosts its annual kurabiraki (brewery opening), celebrating the sake brewing season. Visitors can enjoy freshly brewed sake made from locally sourced rice, limited-edition unfiltered namazake (available only during the event), and sweets made with sake lees.
The brewery’s 150-year-old building is currently undergoing major renovations and is set to reopen in fall 2025 as Sakagura Garten, a space where visitors can enjoy freshly brewed sake and beer on-site. This year, attendees can purchase an exclusive bottled version of Sakagura Garten Lager, which will later be available on tap after the reopening. Guided tours of the brewery’s renovation process will also be offered.
