Sumiyoshi Shrine is the oldest of the more than 2,000 Sumiyoshi Shrines nationwide and has been worshiped as the god of voyage safety and ship protection. The festival is said to have begun as a way of thanking the Sumiyoshi gods for the legendary Empress Jingu’s safe return from Korea by holding sumo and archery matches. Every year, the shinto ritual (Yodo-sai, Honden-sai, No-sai) and godly events (Chigo gyoretsu, Yabusame, Sumo) are held. This year, to prevent the spread of COVID-19, only people involved directly with the rituals can participate.
