Stretching directly for about 2 kilometers from Hakata Station to the Marine Messe – the main venue for the World Aquatics Championships located at Hakata Port – the ‘Taihaku Street’ is a pleasure to walk down. Serving as a historic walkway, about 20 monuments introducing the history of Hakata have been installed. As you walk from Hakata Station, you can trace the history from the Yayoi period to the early modern period in chronological order. Monuments shaped like the national treasure “Golden Seal”, anchor stones left in Hakata Bay during the Mongol invasions, old photographs, and antique maps all allow you to appreciate the state and transformation of the Hakata townscape at the time.
During the period of the World Aquatics Championships, Taihaku Street will be adorned with flowers and stalls will open. The vendors at the stalls change daily, with souvenir shops selling items made of Hakata weave, pottery, calligraphy, and illustrated postcards. There are also stalls offering fresh fruits and vegetables, coffee, tea, and more. We invite you to take a leisurely walk down Taihaku Street.
