Tochoji Temple in Hakata Old Town will open the normally closed interior of its five-story pagoda for a special viewing. Visitors can enter the first level and see the principal image of Dainichi Nyorai, along with richly detailed paintings depicting Japan’s four seasons, flowers, birds, and other motifs.

The interior paintings are by Japanese-style painter Rei Toriyama, who studied under Ikuo Hirayama. Created using mineral pigments and gold leaf, the decorated interior is being opened to the public for the first time in four years.
