Keep Cool with a ‘Green Curtain’
You can help save energy this summer by growing a ‘green curtain’ of morning glories or other vining plants. Green curtains cool your home by blocking out the sun’s rays and preventing heat buildup; the moisture that evaporates from the plants also has a cooling effect. City Hall will hold the Green Curtain Contest again this year. Visit the Environmental Bureau homepage for application forms. (http://www.city.fukuoka.lg.jp/kankyo/).

Big Cleanup Day
The annual Love Earth Cleanup will be held at beaches, rivers and parks throughout the city on 6/8 (Sun). Now in its 23rd year, this public-private cleanup event that began in Fukuoka has since spread to the rest of Kyushu and Okinawa as well as Pusan, Korea. No applications are required and everyone is welcome. Dress comfortably, bring work gloves and meet at one of the 160 meeting spots around the city. Fuel for Eco Cars
Fukuoka is working with corporate partners and Kyushu University on an unprecedented initiative to generate hydrogen from sludge for use in fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). The project, which will be conducted at the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant, entails fermenting sludge, a byproduct of wastewater treatment, to generate biogas. Hydrogen will be extracted from the biogas and sold via a filling station for FCVs. The project will run on a trial basis for a year to examine costs and other factors.
