More taxi companies in Kyushu are offering discount fares to the elderly who have relinquished their drivers’ licenses due to weaker eyesight or other reasons. According to the Kyushu Transport Bureau, 91 companies in Kagoshima, Saga, and Kumamoto prefectures are offering these discounts, and Hakata Taxi of Fukuoka will begin this service on March 1. The National Police Agency says there was a 4.3% increase last year in fatal traffic accidents in which a driver was 65 years of age or older.
