Kyushu Electric Power revealed that as of April 1, the number of contracts for power consumers to purchase electrical power from suppliers other than Kyushu Electric totaled 1,704, a decline of 84 from the end of March, when the fiscal year ended. Retail sales of power were deregulated in 2000 to allow consumers to purchase power from suppliers other than the utility. The decline is attributed to the reduction in the number of new suppliers due to lower profitability resulting from skyrocketing fuel prices.
