A Ministry of Justice-operated halfway house for people released from prison in Kitakyushu, the first of its kind in the nation, marked its first anniversary last week. The facility provides lodgings for former prison inmates who were sentenced to less than eight years in prison to ease the transition as they look for work. During its first year, the center has released seven people back into society. Local concerns about public safety remain, however.
