Shiiba-son in Miyazaki Prefecture and Mizukami-mura in Kumamoto Prefecture have agreed to settle the boundary between the two villages. This will become the first redrawing of prefectural boundaries in Japan since 1871, or about 140 years. After a proposal is debated and passed through the assemblies of both municipalities and both prefectures, a report will be issued to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. The two villages have a common border of about 30 kilometers, and of that about a two-kilometer stretch has not been settled.
