10 Point Earthquake Safety Guide
Earthquakes are disasters that occur without warning, unlike windstorms or floods. For your own safety do not panic. Preparations are key to minimize damage.

1. Firstly, secure your own safety.
Hide under a table or a desk. Be careful around furniture which may fall.

2. Reduce risk of fires.
Shut off the gas main switch and unplug electrical appliances.

3. Open a door to secure your exit.
In order to ensure a point of evacuation open all doors near you.

4. Extinguish fires immediately.
Prepare and check fire extinguishers and learn fire fighting skills in advance.

5. Keep flashlights nearby.
Keep flashlights handy in case of power outage or nighttime evacuation.

6. Be aware of landslides and tsunami.
If you’re in an area likely to be effected evacuate as soon as possible.

7. Evacuate on foot and minimize baggage.
Prepare emergency supplies in a backpack. Do not use cars or elevators.

8. Keep away from walls, cliffs, rivers and small alleys.
Distance yourself from things that fall easily such as brick walls, gateposts and vending machines.

9. Act calmly and obtain information from reliable sources.
Prepare a portable radio and do not be misled by incorrect information or rumors.

10. Cooperate and help each other.
Assist elderly, handicapped and injured persons. Cooperate to extinguish fires.
