Fukuoka Police Boost Stalking Defense with New Safety Camera

In response to increasing cases of stalking, the Fukuoka Prefectural Police Headquarters has introduced 27 new “Personal Safety Cameras” designed to capture images of perpetrators who approach victims’ homes. These images will be shared with the police. The types of cameras, which are not publicly disclosed for security reasons, include models that can be placed at the victim’s front door or door scopes that monitor the outside. The cameras start recording when they detect movement, and the footage is shared and stored at the connected police station, triggering an alarm. If a perpetrator is identified, police will respond for safety purposes. This initiative started three years ago with 10 cameras and now has expanded due to the high number of stalking incidents reported in Fukuoka, the highest in Japan for four consecutive years. This includes a tragic case in January where a woman was murdered by her former partner near JR Hakata Station. The Fukuoka Police emphasize the importance of using these cameras effectively to ensure victim safety and urge anyone feeling threatened by stalking to consult the police immediately. Source: NHK
