Fukuoka Prefecture has installed “earth heat pumps”, which use seasonal differentials in earth temperature for heating and air conditioning, in about 40 households in the city of Fukutsu as a trial. The objective is to conserve energy and reduce CO2. The Ministry of the Environment says they know of no other similar trials of this size conducted in Japan.
