For the first time, a Gundam-themed float will be featured in the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival (July 1-15, 2024). The “Hachiban Yamakasa Kamikawabata-dori,” known for its “Running Kazari Yamakasa,” will showcase a float inspired by “Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack.” The float will be displayed at Kamikawabata Shopping Street from its unveiling on July 1 until the festival’s climax on the early morning of July 15. On July 12, during the rehearsal run, and on July 15 during the main event, the float will be carried through the streets of Hakata by the participants.

The “Running Yamakasa” of Hachiban Yamakasa is known for its impressive size, standing over 10 meters tall and weighing more than 2 tons, making it the largest float in the festival. Unlike other floats, which are either for carrying or for display, this grand float is designed to be carried through the streets. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the “Mobile Suit Gundam” series, first aired in 1979. The intricately crafted and boldly designed Gundam float is set to add a new layer of excitement to Fukuoka’s historic festival.
