JA Saga, the local agricultural cooperative, revealed that they have become the first in Japan to successfully use a new method for the artificial insemination of cows. The fertilized egg is frozen in the conventional method, but that can cause problems when it is thawed. The new method involves chilling the egg to 4 C, which enables it to be preserved for about three days. The method is cheaper than freezing, has a higher rate of success, and also enables shipment of the eggs throughout the country.
