Kyushu Electric Power revealed that new entrants into the power supply industry had been able to capture a total of 1,619 power supply contracts from the utility as of April 1. It is the first time this number of contracts has exceeded 1,000 since the deregulation of electric power in 2000. With the possibility of electricity cutbacks after the Tohoku earthquake and nuclear accident, electricity consumers are diversifying risk and looking for alternative providers.
