The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications conducted a nationwide survey on critically depopulated communities whose population of elderly residents is at least 50%. It found there were 2,094 such communities in Kyushu, an increase of 439 from the last survey four years ago. It was the second-highest total of the 10 regional blocs nationwide, behind the Chugoku area.
