Lavish Transportation Allowances for Nagasaki Prefectural Council Members

A Nishinippon Shimbun investigation found that the Nagasaki Prefectural Council created a rule providing from 5-8,000 yen a day to each of the 46 council members for transportation expenses as part of their policy research allowance, even if they take a bus or train and the expenses amount to only a few hundred yen. The transportation allowance paid to the members in FY 2011 totaled roughly 29 million yen. No receipts are required to receive the allowance, it is paid for attending local events in addition to research, it is disbursed almost daily, and the legislators already receive another transportation allowance.
