Lower Than Average Percentage of Female Assembly Members in Kyushu

The percentage of female local assembly members in the Kyushu-Okinawa region remains lower than the national average. According to a report by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the proportion of prefectural assembly seats held by women in Kumamoto marked the lowest in Japan as of December 2020, falling 7.3% behind the average. Only Okinawa (14.6%) and Nagasaki (13.3%) surpassed the national average. The entire region is facing a challenge to promote equitable participation of women in politics. Source: NHK
