Fukuoka’s Historic Nakasu Taiyo to Close, Final Bow with Chaplin

The Nakasu Taiyo movie theater in Fukuoka City is set to close at the end of March, drawing the curtain on its 78-year history. For its final farewell, special screenings of three Charlie Chaplin films will be held from March 29 to 31, with all tickets priced at ¥1,000. Constructed from the ashes of the post-war devastation with the aim of brightening the spirits of Hakata’s residents through entertainment, the original founder—a construction business owner and the client’s grandfather—built this three-story wooden cinema, boasting approximately 1,500 seats. Due to the building’s deterioration, it will end operations by the end of March and is scheduled for demolition.
