Safety First: Kitakyushu Addresses Aging Public Facilities

The city of Kitakyushu in Japan has announced the formation of a task force to comprehensively evaluate the aging infrastructure of public facilities. This decision was made in response to numerous incidents across the city, including one where a 1-kilogram piece of metal fell from the Wakato Bridge onto the pedestrian walkway, and several instances of exterior walls falling off from municipal housing buildings. The city plans to survey roughly 6,800 facilities, including municipal housing. A significant proportion – about 60 percent – of these buildings are over 30 years old and require extensive renovations, indicating that a comprehensive approach is urgently required.
