The Japan Department Stores Association reports that same-store department store sales in Fukuoka City for May were down 12.1% from the year-before period, the 34th straight monthly decline. The figure is significant because it is for the important Golden Week holiday period, and shows the impact that the new Hakata Hankyu store has had on its competitors. Of the nation’s 10 largest cities, Fukuoka City was the only one with a change of more than 10% plus or minus from the previous year.
