Sniffing Out Cancer: New Test for Dogs

A venture company that has commercialized a technology to detect cancer by having a creature called “nematode,” known for their exceptional sense of smell, sniff human urine will begin offering cancer screening for dogs starting in May. The venture company, HIROTSU Bioscience, was founded by a former assistant professor who studied nematodes at Kyushu University Graduate School. On the 11th, Takaaki Hirotsu, the company’s representative, visited the prefectural office and reported the business to Governor Hattori. According to the company, many pet dogs are believed to die from cancer, but in many cases, the detection is delayed because dogs cannot express pain or discomfort. With this test, nine types of cancer common in dogs, such as lymphoma and breast cancer, can be examined with just one drop of urine, and test kits will be sold online starting next month.
