Snow Continues to Accumulate Across Northern Kyushu

A broad area of northern Kyushu was left under a blanket of snow after a massive cold air front flowed over the region. As of 5:00 a.m., seven-centimeter snow-covered Saga Station’s streets in Saga, and twelve centimeters accumulated near Minami-yamatemachi in Nagasaki City. The forecast calls for continuing snowfall across the region until Sunday morning; 10 cm in flat areas of Fukuoka Prefecture, 20 cm on the mountainside, 10 cm in the flat areas of Saga Prefecture, 15 cm in flat areas of Nagasaki Prefecture and the other regions. Many traffic accidents were reported under the icy road conditions and a water outage at an Iizuka City-based hospital due to frozen pipes. Also, as of the morning of Jan. 9, a large part of the expressways are closed. JR Kyushu and Nishitetsu have announced delays and scheduled cancelations for some lines. Also, flights departing from/ arriving at Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Saga, and Oita will be partially canceled. Please check the latest information on the official websites.
