Incumbent Itoshima Mayor Yuji Tsukigata won a fourth consecutive term in the city’s mayoral election held on February 1, defeating first-time challenger Mari Nakamura, a former university professor. Tsukigata, 67, ran as an independent with backing from the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito. Voter turnout reached 55.17%, up from 51.22% in the previous election, with 84,280 eligible voters. During the campaign, Tsukigata emphasized his three-term record, including construction of a new city hall, development of a sports park, and promotion of the “Brand Itoshima” image. He pledged to continue policies focused on free school lunches, attracting businesses, and improving child-rearing conditions as the city’s population continues to grow.
