Two Miyazaki Mangoes Fetch Half Million at Auction

The first auction of the year for Taiyo no Tamago, a brand of mangoes from Miyazaki Prefecture, was held on Apr. 8. This year, the weather condition allowed an earlier shipment of the seasonal fruit and 1,679 boxes were sold at thirty-one markets across Japan. At the Miyazaki City central fresh market, a box of two mangos (approximately 1 kilogram) was sold for ¥500,000, about ¥100,000 more than the previous year. The luxurious mango brand debuted twenty-two years ago with strict requirements including a minimum “sweetness level” of at least 15 and has since become popular nationwide.
