Asia Kawaii Hakusho – Visit Yanagawa!

In RKB Mainichi Broadcasting Company’s new series “Asia☆Kawaii Hakusho!”, kawaii☆reporters introduce many adorable things and places in Kyushu. In these three episodes Sachiko (of mixed Taiwanese and Japanese ancestry) introduces popular, and of course, totally adorable tourist attractions in Yanagawa!

Soy sauce making workshop in Yanagawa

Soy sauce making tasting & workshop followed by dining out!
Sachiko tries her hand at making soy sauce at this local brewery that began production back in 1900. Then she learns more about Japanese cuisine and food culture while enjoying a healthy meal inside a fancy restaurant.

Ohana, former residence of the Tachibana Family

Feudal Lords’ Former Residence
Ohana was once the residence of the Tachibana Family, feudal lords of the Yanagawa clan. The museum on-site offers a collection of important cultural assets including antique swords and armor. Also visit the large Shoto-en garden that exemplifies traditional Japanese botanical beauty. There are several souvenir shops and restaurants, but make sure to drop by the recently opened specialty coffee shop “Kuyuru” and have a cup of blended coffee. The coffee’s package features illustrations of a princess and general. And don’t miss seeing some sagemon, the colorful hanging decorations, which are hung inside homes as charms for the health of young girls.

Yanagawa River Cruising and Eel

River Punting in Yanagawa!
Join a punting tour through the many kilometers of canals of Yanagawa. The waterway network spans the city. See how people coexisted and prospered with the water in the past and even today. It takes about one hour to complete the 3 km tour, beginning at Yanagawa Station and onward to sightseeing spots like Ohana and Okihama. Relax in the boats as they glide along and enjoy the songs of the boatmen as the scenery passes by.

Try Yanagawa’s traditional dish, steamed eel
Formerly a chef in a French restaurant, the restaurant owner wanted to serve a local dish, and here we can enjoy aromatic grilled eel on rice seasoned with a special sauce. Enjoy its subtle and sweet taste!
