Fukuoka City Art Museum: Modern Art Collection Exhibition – ‘Collection Highlights’

START: Jul 14, 2023 END: Aug 15, 2023

The Fukuoka City Art Museum presents its acclaimed ‘Collection Highlights’ exhibition, a collection that encapsulates the city’s signature modern and contemporary artworks. This time, there are two themes on display. One section, ‘The Stars of the Fukuoka City Art Museum,’ showcases carefully selected masterpieces that trace the course of 20th-century art history, collected over the years. In a complementary section themed ‘Art Walk,’ works from the museum’s approximately 12,000 pieces of modern and contemporary art are displayed, organized into four ‘locations.’

In ‘The Stars of the Fukuoka City Art Museum’ section, visitors can view pieces like Louis-Joseph-Raphaël Collin’s “At the Seashore,” Marc Chagall’s “The Flying Carriage,” Joan Miró’s “Dancer Listening to Organ in a Gothic Cathedral,” Salvador Dalí’s “Virgin of Port Lligat,” Andy Warhol’s “Elvis,” and Yayoi Kusama’s “Summer.”

Located in Ohori Park, a haven of water and greenery close to the city center, the Fukuoka City Art Museum was opened in 1979, designed by Kunio Maekawa, often referred to as the father of Japanese modernist architecture. The museum preserves and collects approximately 16,000 pieces, including significant cultural properties such as tea ceremony utensils and Buddhist art, along with works by modern Western artists from Kyushu, renowned 20th-century foreign artists, and contemporary artworks. After substantial renovations, it reopened in 2019.

During the World Aquatics Championships period (July 14th – August 15th), a Beer Terrace will be set up on the second-floor terrace of the museum. It will serve light meals and cocktails themed around the championship’s mascot and the sea, as well as beers from 10 different countries (2:30pm – Last Order at 7:30pm, excluding closed days).
