Discover the rich history and enduring appeal of Kurume Kasuri, a type of woven fabric originating from the Chikugo region in southern Fukuoka. With a history spanning over 200 years, this local craft continues to captivate creators both in Japan and abroad. Hirokawa Town, a major production center for Kurume Kasuri, hosts the Kasuri Festival twice a year. Here, visitors can purchase fabric, garments, and accessories at special one-day-only prices.
One of the festival’s highlights is the “Kasurin Pick,” a spirited competition where participants race to roll bolts of Kurume Kasuri fabric (Free to join, day-of registration available). The winner is awarded a bolt of the fabric, making for the most exhilarating moment of the festival.
Additional features include kimono-dressing experiences (first-come-first-serve for 10 people per day at ¥500 each), a fashion show by local high school students showcasing Kurume Kasuri designs, and booths selling regional specialty items like tea and fruit. Don’t miss this vibrant celebration, offering a deep dive into the world of traditional Japanese textiles!
