The National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Kanoya, Kagoshima Prefecture, and Unnet, an agricultural corporation in that city, have begun joint work on a supplement for athletes using the edible leaves of the suiou variety of sweet potato and the Cordyceps mushroom. The objective is to use local ingredients and create a product to provide a fillip to the economy. Suiou is a new variety of satsumaimo registered in 2004 that is rich in polyphenols, while the Chinese women’s track and field team popularized the use of the Cordyceps mushroom in the 1990s.
