The Fukuoka Mitsukoshi Gallery is hosting an exhibition of Japanese handicrafts this February. The event, which has taken place every year since 1954, aims to promote traditional techniques and develop new items for modern day life. This year marks the 69th time that the exhibition has been staged. A total of 359 items will be featured in the displays, including 16 award-winning pieces created by living national treasures. The highest award, the Japan Crafts Association President’s Award, went to Mr. Shoko Kawano, a bamboo craft artist from Oita City. During the period, commentary on the works will be given by the holders of Important Intangible Cultural Properties at the venue. (From 12:00 p.m. on each day; held twice, at 12:00 p.m. and 15:00 p.m. on 2/4 and 2/5 only)
